License Renewal. It doesn’t have to be this hard.

Ohio Cosmetology License Renewal

A lot seems to change with Ohio cosmetology license renewal with every new cycle. The State of Ohio sometimes does away with some requirements and adds others. Of course this year is no different. Things change, but don’t worry, we got you covered.

About This License Renewal Guide

This guide was last updated 10/23/2022.

We cover everything you need to know (and leave out what you don’t!) in our unofficial-but-totally-definitive guide to Ohio cosmetology license renewal. Follow the steps in this guide to renew a Ohio cosmetologist, manicurist, hair designer, or esthetician license.

Hey, disclaimer time, we’re not the State Board!

This guide is written by cosmetologists for cosmetologists. And we didn’t just rewrite the same info that’s on the Ohio State Board’s website (but definitely go there for all of the official documentation). We went through the process ourselves to identify all of the “gotchas” so your experience is as quick and easy as possible.

So What’s the Latest on License Renewal?

Here’s the big change this time around:

  • The four-hour practice CE requirement was DROPPED for this cycle.

That means that most Ohio license holders just need the following to renew their license:

  • 3 hours of Safety and Infection Control (check out our course)
  • 1 hour of Ohio Rules and Regulations that is only offered by the Ohio State Board

So four hours total – three from a CE provider (like us!) and one from State Board. That’s pretty much it this year. You can check out the full list of requirements on the State Board’s site here.

NOTE: First time license holders, inactive/lapsed license holders, those age +65, and those with +30 years of experience do not need to complete the CE requirement for license renewal.
